Odd One Out

A simple and self-explanatory activity – write some words on the board, give students some thinking time then ask them to pick the odd one out. You can make some obvious, with only one sensible answer, and others more open (so there could be more than one plausible answer). For example:

  1. Coal, Crude Oil, Wind
  2. Bio-ethanol, Solar, Coal
  3. Geothermal, Hydroelectric, Solar

Possible answers:

  1. Wind – because it’s renewable.
  2. Coal – because it’s non-renewable OR Solar – because you don’t burn it.
  3. Solar – because it doesn’t work 24 hours a day OR Geothermal – because the energy isn’t derived from the Sun OR Hydroelectric – it isn’t used for heating.
